2006 - LONDON
WORLD AIDS DAY - 01 DECEMBER 2006. "KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON IN YOU, GET TESTED"

As the reigning Miss Zambia UK, Rosemary was addressing a Public Forum organised by the Commonwealth Secretariat to commemorate World AIDS Day on Friday 1st December 2006, at Marlborough House, the Headquarters of the Commonwealth in London.

As an Award winning Zambian Beauty Queen, Rosemary was invited as a celebrity guest speaker representing the youth at the Commonwealth event which was attended by Commonwealth High Commissioners, and a variety of honourable guests including representatives of civil society and non-governmental organisations who are collaborators in the global fight against HIV/AIDS.

The theme was 'Accountability: Stop Aids - Keep the Promise'.

A few statistics conducted by Rosemary...As at 01 December 2006, Of the 42 million people living with HIV/AIDS globally, 60% were citizens of Commonwealth member states. The Public Forum hoped to encourage the Commonwealth and its member countries to continue to generate a greater public awareness of and engagement with the problem of AIDS worldwide.

So the question Rosemary asked was.....What would everyone be doing on World AIDS Day??

20 people in the UK were newly diagnosed with HIV; around the world, over 10,000 were newly infected. It was to happen again on December 2nd, December 3rd and December 4th. It was happening every day of the year. But on December 1st, World AIDS Day, everyone could actually do something about it.

Rosemary's suggested two simple things everyone could have done to make a difference on World AIDS Day were:

1) Wear a red ribbon and encourage friends, colleagues, anyone they could think of to wear a red ribbon.

Rosemary highlighted that they were several events happening on December 1st. An immediate solution was to join in the World AIDS Day campaigns, get people wearing a red ribbon..and to be active.
